A: Model the file system as a tree where each node caches its own size plus the sum of its children, so a directory size read is O(1) and writes propagate the delta up the parent chain. For the top N report, walk the tree once and keep the largest N directories in a min-heap of size N.
Q: Design a simple snake game where a snake can move in a given direction.
A: Keep the snake body as a deque of grid coordinates and a set for O(1) collision checks. Each tick, compute the new head from the current direction, push it to the front, and pop the tail unless the snake just ate food.
Q: Design a tag management system for Atlassian. Support add, remove, and search based on tags.
A: Use two inverted indexes: tag to set of item IDs, and item to set of tags. Add and remove update both maps in constant time, and search by tag returns the item set directly, with multi-tag queries handled by set intersection.
Q: Design a low-level suggestion system: given a dictionary like [CAT, CATS, CATALOGE, METTLE, METAL, FITTING] and input words [CAT, DOG, MET, FIT], return prefix-based dictionary matches for each input word.
A: Build a trie from the dictionary, then for each input word walk to the node matching its prefix and collect every word in that subtree. Words with no matching prefix node return an empty suggestion list.
