The Kroger Co. is a US grocery retailer founded in 1883 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by Bernard Kroger. It runs nearly 2,800 stores across 35 states and the District of Columbia under about two dozen banners, including Kroger, Ralphs, Fred Meyer, King Soopers, Smith's, QFC, Harris Teeter, Fry's and Dillons. Alongside supermarkets it operates manufacturing plants, distribution centres, pharmacies and fuel centres, and it serves over 11 million customers a day through stores and eCommerce.
Kroger is listed on the NYSE under the ticker KR and reported total company sales of USD 147.6 billion for full-year 2025. Its market capitalisation was about USD 34.1 billion in late July 2026. For 2026 the company guided to identical sales without fuel of 1.0% to 2.0%, adjusted FIFO operating profit of USD 5.0 to 5.2 billion and adjusted EPS of USD 5.10 to 5.30. First quarter 2026 sales came in at USD 46.1 billion with adjusted eCommerce sales up 19%.
The company employs more than 400,000 associates, and about two thirds of them are covered by collective bargaining agreements, mostly with the United Food and Commercial Workers union. Leadership changed hands in February 2026 when Greg Foran, formerly head of Walmart US and Air New Zealand, became CEO, succeeding interim CEO Ron Sargent, who stayed on as Chairman. Kroger also runs the 84.51 data analytics business and Kroger Precision Marketing, its retail media arm.
