Etsy Interview Questions & Answers

Q: How would you implement a function to reverse a string?

A: Walk through the two-pointer swap on a character array, which runs in linear time and constant extra space, then mention the language's built-in shortcut and why you'd still show the manual version. Call out immutable strings and multi-byte characters before you finish.

Answer by AI
  • Convert to a mutable character array, then swap the first and last characters and move both pointers inward until they meet. That's O(n) time and O(1) extra space.
  • Note that in languages with immutable strings you can't swap in place, so you build a new buffer and the space cost becomes O(n).
  • Flag Unicode: naive byte or code-unit reversal breaks emoji and combining characters, so you'd reverse by grapheme cluster if the input is user-generated.

Q: Write a function that checks if a given binary tree is balanced.

A: Use a single post-order traversal that returns the height of each subtree and short-circuits the moment a subtree differs in height by more than one. That gets you O(n) instead of the O(n log n) you'd pay by calling a height helper at every node.

Answer by AI
  • Define balanced as: for every node, the heights of the left and right subtrees differ by at most one.
  • Recurse post-order returning height, and propagate a sentinel such as -1 upward as soon as any subtree is unbalanced so you stop early.
  • Complexity is O(n) time and O(h) stack space. Mention that a deep skewed tree can blow the stack, so an iterative version matters for production input.

Q: How would you design a URL shortening service?

A: Start with the read-heavy access pattern, then cover key generation, storage, caching and redirects. Interviewers here want your reasoning about trade-offs, not a memorised architecture, so state your assumptions on scale up front.

Answer by AI
  • Clarify scale and requirements first: writes per second, reads per second, link lifetime, custom aliases, analytics needs.
  • Generate keys either by base62-encoding a distributed counter or by hashing the URL and handling collisions. Store the mapping in a key-value store partitioned by short code.
  • Serve redirects from cache with a 301 or 302 depending on whether you need per-click analytics, and discuss expiry, rate limiting and abuse detection for malicious links.

Q: How would you approach debugging a complex issue in a production environment?

A: Describe a repeatable loop: contain impact first, then narrow the blast radius with data before you touch code. A structured answer beats a war story that jumps straight to the fix.

Answer by AI
  • Stabilise first. Check whether a rollback, feature flag or traffic shift stops customer pain while you investigate.
  • Narrow with evidence: correlate the start time against deploys and config changes, then use dashboards, traces and logs to isolate the failing service or query.
  • Form one hypothesis at a time, test it in a lower environment or with a targeted query, then fix, verify and write the postmortem with a concrete prevention item.
