Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is an Indian state owned aerospace and defence company headquartered at Cubbon Road in Bengaluru. It began in 1940 as Hindustan Aircraft and was incorporated in its present form in 1963, with the merger creating Hindustan Aeronautics Limited taking effect on 1 October 1964. The Government of India holds roughly 71% of the company, and HAL trades on both Indian exchanges as NSE: HAL and BSE: 541154. It received Maharatna status in October 2024, which gives it wider financial and operational autonomy than most central public sector firms.

The company designs, builds, repairs and maintains fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, along with aero engines, avionics and accessories. Its best known product is the Tejas Light Combat Aircraft. Manufacturing runs across roughly 21 production divisions and 11 R&D centres spread over Bengaluru, Tumakuru, Nashik, Koraput, Kanpur, Lucknow, Hyderabad, Kasaragod and Barrackpore. Programmes in production or development include the Tejas Mk1A, the Light Combat Helicopter, the Hindustan-228 transport aircraft and indigenous engines such as the HTFE-25 and HTSE-1200.

For FY2025-26 HAL reported consolidated revenue of about Rs 33,089 crore and consolidated profit after tax of Rs 9,115.52 crore, with a market capitalisation near Rs 3.05 lakh crore. Headcount stood at 22,033 as of 31 March 2025, down from 22,655 a year earlier. The order book reached roughly Rs 2.54 lakh crore after fresh orders of about Rs 97,028 crore during the year, including a Rs 62,370 crore contract for 97 additional Tejas Mk1A jets signed in September 2025.
