HSBC Holdings plc is a British multinational banking and financial services group founded in 1865 and headquartered at 8 Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London. It's listed on the London Stock Exchange (HSBA), the New York Stock Exchange (HSBC) and the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (5), with a market capitalisation of about US$353 billion as of July 2026. The group reported revenue of US$68.3 billion and profit before tax of US$29.9 billion for 2025, and employs roughly 211,000 people worldwide.
The bank is organised around Corporate and Institutional Banking, International Wealth and Premier Banking, and its Hong Kong and UK businesses, and describes itself as the world's largest trade bank. Georges Elhedery has been Group CEO since September 2024, Pam Kaur is Group CFO, and Brendan Nelson serves as Group Chairman. Current strategy centres on simplification, a target of 17 percent return on tangible equity or better each year from 2026 to 2028, and heavy investment in AI, including a multi-year Google Cloud partnership announced in June 2026.
India is one of HSBC's largest markets by headcount. The bank traces its Indian roots to the Mercantile Bank of India, set up in Mumbai in 1853 and acquired by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation in 1959, and it opened its first ATM in India in 1987. HSBC employs about 47,000 people in India across banking branches, Global Service Centres in Hyderabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata and Gurgaon, and large technology teams in Hyderabad and Pune. Hitendra Dave is CEO of HSBC India, and the bank offers retail and wealth, commercial, trade, capital markets and asset management services, plus an international banking unit at GIFT City.
