Asda Stores Limited is one of the largest supermarket chains in the United Kingdom, headquartered at Asda House in Leeds, England. The business began in 1949 as Associated Dairies and adopted the Asda name in 1965. It operates around 1,100 stores, forecourt sites and convenience locations nationwide, selling groceries, general merchandise and clothing through its George brand, alongside Asda Money and Asda Mobile services.

The company was owned by Walmart from 1999 until February 2021, when it was acquired by the Issa brothers and private equity firm TDR Capital. Asda is now a private company owned by TDR Capital (67.5%), Mohsin Issa (22.5%) and Walmart, which retained a 10% stake. It does not trade on any public exchange, so it has no market capitalisation.

For the financial year ended December 2024, Asda reported revenue of about £21.7bn excluding fuel and adjusted EBITDA after rent of £1.14bn. The company is led by Executive Chairman Allan Leighton, who returned in November 2024; it has not had a permanent CEO since 2021 and plans to promote its next chief executive from within. Michael Gleeson serves as Chief Financial Officer.

Asda Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Why do you want the job?

A: Connect your reason to the role itself, not just needing work. Show you understand what a Section Leader does day to day and why that suits you.

Answer by AI
  • Name a specific pull: leading a team, owning availability on a section, or growing into retail management.
  • Tie it to something you already do well, like organising work or supporting colleagues under pressure.
  • Close with why Asda specifically, referencing its scale and colleague-focused culture.

Q: Tell me about yourself.

A: Keep it to a short, work-focused summary. Cover who you are, relevant experience, and why you fit a customer-facing shop-floor role.

Answer by AI
  • Open with a one-line identity: your current situation and what you enjoy doing.
  • Highlight one or two experiences that show reliability and comfort with customers.
  • End by linking your strengths to what a Service Colleague does at Asda.

Q: Tell me about a time you worked with a team and what your role was.

A: Use a simple structure: the situation, what you personally did, and the result. Make your own contribution clear.

Answer by AI
  • Set the scene briefly: the team, the goal, and any pressure like a busy period.
  • State your specific role and one action you took to help the group succeed.
  • Finish with the outcome and what it taught you about teamwork.

Q: What is your availability?

A: Be honest and specific about days and hours you can work, including evenings and weekends if you can. Flexibility helps for shift-based retail.

Answer by AI
  • State the days and time windows you can reliably commit to.
  • Mention any flexibility for weekends, evenings or extra shifts if true.
  • Flag any fixed constraints upfront so expectations are clear.
