Asda Stores Limited is one of the largest supermarket chains in the United Kingdom, headquartered at Asda House in Leeds, England. The business began in 1949 as Associated Dairies and adopted the Asda name in 1965. It operates around 1,100 stores, forecourt sites and convenience locations nationwide, selling groceries, general merchandise and clothing through its George brand, alongside Asda Money and Asda Mobile services.
The company was owned by Walmart from 1999 until February 2021, when it was acquired by the Issa brothers and private equity firm TDR Capital. Asda is now a private company owned by TDR Capital (67.5%), Mohsin Issa (22.5%) and Walmart, which retained a 10% stake. It does not trade on any public exchange, so it has no market capitalisation.
For the financial year ended December 2024, Asda reported revenue of about £21.7bn excluding fuel and adjusted EBITDA after rent of £1.14bn. The company is led by Executive Chairman Allan Leighton, who returned in November 2024; it has not had a permanent CEO since 2021 and plans to promote its next chief executive from within. Michael Gleeson serves as Chief Financial Officer.
