Dell Technologies Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Explain the layers of the OSI Model.

A: The OSI model has seven layers: Physical, Data Link, Network, Transport, Session, Presentation, and Application. Each layer handles a specific job and passes data to the layer above or below it.

Answer by AI
  • Name all seven layers in order and give one job for each, for example the Network layer handles routing and IP addressing.
  • Contrast it with the practical 4-layer TCP/IP model so the interviewer sees you know both the theory and what's used in production.
  • Tie a layer to a real example, like TCP retransmission at the Transport layer, to show you understand it beyond memorization.

Q: How is a doubly linked list implemented in C++?

A: A node stores the data plus two pointers, one to the previous node and one to the next. You maintain head and tail references and update both neighbor pointers on every insert or delete.

Answer by AI
  • Define the node struct with data, a prev pointer, and a next pointer.
  • Walk through insert-at-head, insert-at-tail, and delete, being explicit about updating both prev and next links to avoid dangling pointers.
  • Mention the trade-off: extra memory per node for the second pointer buys you O(1) deletion when you already hold the node and easy backward traversal.

Q: Merge overlapping intervals (explain your approach first, then write the function).

A: Sort the intervals by start time, then scan once and merge any interval whose start falls inside the current running interval by extending its end. This runs in O(n log n) time.

Answer by AI
  • State the approach out loud first: sort by start, then a single linear merge pass.
  • Keep a result list, and for each interval either extend the last merged interval's end or push a new one when there's no overlap.
  • Call out the complexity (O(n log n) from the sort) and edge cases like touching intervals and an empty input.

Q: Delete the Nth node from the end of a linked list.

A: Use two pointers spaced N nodes apart. Advance both until the leading pointer hits the end, then the trailing pointer sits just before the node to remove, so you can unlink it in one pass.

Answer by AI
  • Describe the two-pointer gap technique so you solve it in a single traversal instead of counting length first.
  • Use a dummy head node so deleting the first node is handled without a special case.
  • Confirm the edge cases: N equal to the list length, and N larger than the list.
