GlobalFoundries Inc. is a US-headquartered semiconductor contract manufacturer, or foundry, that makes chips for other companies rather than selling its own branded silicon. It was created on March 2, 2009 as a spin-off of AMD's manufacturing operations and is headquartered in Malta, New York. The company listed on Nasdaq under the ticker GFS in October 2021 and remains majority-owned by Abu Dhabi's Mubadala Investment Company.
The business focuses on differentiated, feature-rich process technologies rather than the leading-edge node race. It runs 300mm and 200mm fabs in Malta (New York), Essex Junction (Vermont), Dresden (Germany) and Singapore, serving smart mobile devices, automotive, aerospace and defence, IoT, and data centre and communications infrastructure customers. For fiscal 2025 GlobalFoundries reported revenue of US$6.791 billion and net income of US$888 million, and it employs roughly 14,000 people worldwide.
In India, the company operates through Globalfoundries Engineering Private Limited, incorporated in Bengaluru on 29 April 2015 and registered at Manyata Embassy Business Park, Nagavara. Beyond the two Bengaluru sites, GF has offices in Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata, where it's building out a fab-less design and test centre at the STPI facility in Salt Lake. Indian teams cover design engineering, device modelling, yield and integration, CAD and IT, plus finance, tax and legal shared services.

A: Silicon sits in the sweet spot: it's abundant and cheap, it grows a stable native oxide that works as an insulator and gate dielectric, and its bandgap keeps devices reliable at normal operating temperatures.
Q: Explain Statistical Process Control (SPC) to me.
A: SPC uses control charts on measured process outputs to separate normal variation from a real shift. When a point breaches the control limits or trends, you stop, investigate the assignable cause and correct it before scrap builds up.
