Groww Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Detect a loop in a linked list.

A: Use Floyd's cycle detection: move one pointer a step at a time and another two steps at a time, and if they ever meet there's a loop. It runs in linear time with constant extra space.

Answer by AI
  • Start slow and fast pointers at the head, advance slow by one node and fast by two on each iteration.
  • If fast or fast.next becomes null you've reached the end, so there's no cycle; if slow and fast meet, a cycle exists.
  • To find where the loop starts, reset one pointer to the head and move both one step at a time until they meet again.

Q: Find the next greater element.

A: Walk the array once with a monotonic decreasing stack, popping smaller elements and assigning the current value as their answer. That gives linear time instead of the quadratic brute force.

Answer by AI
  • Keep a stack of indices whose next greater element hasn't been found yet.
  • For each new element, pop while the stack top is smaller and record the current element as that index's answer.
  • Anything left on the stack at the end has no greater element, so mark it minus one; total time is linear.

Q: Minimum steps to reach the target by a Knight.

A: Treat the board as an unweighted graph where each square connects to its eight knight moves, then run BFS from the start square. The level at which you first reach the target is the minimum number of moves.

Answer by AI
  • Model every square as a node and the eight legal knight jumps as edges.
  • Run breadth-first search from the source, tracking visited squares so you don't revisit.
  • The BFS depth at which the target is dequeued is the answer; mention the symmetry based closed form only as an optimisation.

Q: Poisoned wine bottle puzzle: with 1000 bottles and rats, identify the poisoned bottle.

A: Encode each bottle number in binary and assign one rat per bit position, feeding each rat every bottle whose bit is set. The pattern of which rats fall ill reads back as the bottle number, so 10 rats cover 1000 bottles.

Answer by AI
  • Frame it as an information problem: each rat gives one bit of output, so n rats distinguish 2 to the power n bottles.
  • Number bottles 0 to 999 in binary and have rat i drink from every bottle with bit i set.
  • Read the sick and healthy pattern as a binary number to identify the bottle; ceiling of log base 2 of 1000 is 10 rats.
