Kaiser Permanente is a not-for-profit integrated managed care organization founded on July 21, 1945 and headquartered at 1 Kaiser Plaza in Oakland, California. It isn't a single company: it's a consortium of three interdependent entities, Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and its regional subsidiaries, Kaiser Foundation Hospitals, and the regional Permanente Medical Groups. That structure lets the same organization act as both the insurer and the care provider for its members.

The organization reported 243,652 employees, 25,505 physicians and 78,630 nurses across 40 hospitals and 609 medical offices, serving roughly 13 million members. Regions cover Northern California, Southern California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, the Mid-Atlantic, the Northwest, Washington state and, since 2026, Nevada. Combined operating revenue with subsidiary Risant Health reached $127.7 billion in 2025, with $1.4 billion of operating income and $9.3 billion of net income.

Growth now runs through two tracks. Risant Health, the Kaiser-created non-profit that acquired Geisinger and Cone Health, is buying value-based systems outside the core Kaiser regions. Separately, a joint venture with Renown Health closed on February 3, 2026 and put Kaiser Permanente into northern Nevada, where its first two medical offices opened on July 1, 2026.

Kaiser Permanente Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Patient care requires a strong amount of compassion. Kaiser Permanente strives to provide compassionate care to their patients. Do you consider yourself a compassionate person?

A: Say yes and back it up with one specific moment where you noticed someone struggling and acted on it without being asked.

Answer by AI
  • Open with a brief, concrete example rather than a general claim.
  • Explain what you noticed, what you did, and how the person responded.
  • Tie it back to how that habit fits Kaiser Permanente's patient-first culture.

Q: How do you feel you would fit in with the cultural values and diverse team at Kaiser Permanente?

A: Point to a past experience working across different backgrounds and how you adapted your communication style to fit the team.

Answer by AI
  • Name a specific value (equity, collaboration, inclusion) rather than speaking generally.
  • Give one example of working effectively with people unlike yourself.
  • Connect your working style to Kaiser Permanente's team-based care model.

Q: What is your patient care philosophy that you would bring to work at Kaiser Permanente?

A: Keep it short and centered on the patient: listen first, explain clearly, and treat every interaction with the same respect you'd want for your own family.

Answer by AI
  • State your philosophy in one sentence before elaborating.
  • Support it with a short example from prior clinical or service work.
  • Link it explicitly to Kaiser Permanente's integrated, preventive care model.

Q: Kaiser Permanente is a very large organization and values the promotion of employees from within. What are your ultimate career goals in the healthcare field and what are you doing to fulfill those goals?

A: Describe a realistic multi-year goal and the concrete steps (certifications, mentorship, stretch projects) you're already taking toward it.

Answer by AI
  • State a specific goal, not a vague 'grow professionally' answer.
  • List one or two concrete actions already underway toward that goal.
  • Mention interest in Kaiser Permanente's internal mobility as a reason for applying.
