L&T Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Questions on core subjects, including fundamentals from thermodynamics and your education background.

A: Panels here stay close to your diploma syllabus, so revise the basics you studied rather than advanced theory. Answer with the definition first, then one plant or workshop example.

Answer by AI
  • Start with the definition or law in one line, then the practical case where you have seen it apply.
  • For thermodynamics, be ready on the first and second laws, entropy, and the common cycles from your syllabus.
  • Tie your education answer back to the projects or lab work closest to the role you're applying for.

Q: About heavy machinery service and operation.

A: This is a hands-on check on whether you have actually worked around plant equipment. Walk through a machine you've serviced, what the maintenance schedule looked like, and one fault you diagnosed.

Answer by AI
  • Name the specific machines you've handled and the duty cycle you ran them at.
  • Describe your preventive maintenance routine: inspection intervals, lubrication, wear checks, records.
  • Close with one breakdown you diagnosed, the root cause you found, and how you stopped it recurring.

Q: Pressure vessels and heat exchangers manufacturing.

A: Expect a walk through the fabrication sequence rather than a textbook recital. Cover design inputs, material selection, forming and welding, then testing and clearance.

Answer by AI
  • Lay out the sequence: design and code inputs, material procurement, forming, welding, heat treatment, testing.
  • Mention the inspection gates you own at each stage and who signs off.
  • Bring in a real vessel or exchanger you worked on, with its service conditions and the hold points that mattered.

Q: Questions on materials and ASME codes, plus NDE methods and problem-solving techniques.

A: Be precise about which code section applies to which piece of work, and pair each NDE method with the defect type it catches. Vague answers get probed hard here.

Answer by AI
  • Match the code section to the job: Section VIII for pressure vessels, Section IX for welder and procedure qualification, Section V for examination.
  • Pair each NDE method with what it finds: radiography and ultrasonic for volumetric defects, dye penetrant and magnetic particle for surface defects.
  • For problem solving, use a structured route: define the defect, gather data, find root cause, correct, then verify the fix held.
