Paytm Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Find the longest palindromic substring in a string.

A: Start with the expand-around-center approach because it is easy to explain and uses constant extra space. State the time complexity, then mention dynamic programming only if the interviewer asks for alternatives.

Answer by AI
  • Treat every character and every gap between characters as a possible palindrome center.
  • Expand while the two characters match and retain the longest valid interval.
  • This runs in O(n squared) time and O(1) auxiliary space.

Q: Add two numbers represented by linked lists.

A: Walk both lists together, add corresponding digits and carry, and append each result digit to a new list. Clarify whether digits are stored forward or backward before coding.

Answer by AI
  • Use a dummy head so appending nodes doesn't need a special first-node case.
  • Continue while either list has a node or a carry remains.
  • The algorithm is O(max(m, n)) time and uses O(max(m, n)) output space.

Q: Sort an array containing only 0s, 1s and 2s in place.

A: Use the Dutch national flag algorithm with low, current and high pointers. Explain the invariant for each region before moving pointers.

Answer by AI
  • Values before low are 0, values after high are 2 and the middle is unclassified.
  • Swap 0 with low, advance past 1, and swap 2 with high without advancing current.
  • The solution is O(n) time, O(1) space and completes in one pass.

Q: How would you verify that a binary tree is a BST using O(1) extra space?

A: Use Morris inorder traversal and verify that values appear in increasing order. Be explicit that temporary threaded links are restored before the traversal moves on.

Answer by AI
  • An inorder traversal of a valid BST must produce an ordered sequence.
  • Morris traversal temporarily links each node's predecessor back to the node, avoiding a stack.
  • Compare each visited value with the previous one and fail on any non-increasing pair.
