AIG Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Explain the difference between an RDD and a DataFrame in PySpark. When would you use one over the other?

A: RDDs are the low-level distributed collection that give fine-grained control over any data type, while DataFrames add a schema and the Catalyst optimizer for faster, more memory-efficient queries. Reach for DataFrames on structured, SQL-style work and drop to RDDs only when you need custom low-level transformations.

Answer by AI
  • RDDs give low-level control over unstructured data with no built-in optimizer.
  • DataFrames add a schema plus Catalyst and Tungsten optimizations for speed.
  • Prefer DataFrames for structured ETL; use RDDs for custom, fine-grained logic.

Q: Write a function to process a stream of data and identify duplicates in real-time.

A: Keep a seen set (or a bounded structure like a Bloom filter for huge streams) and check each incoming record against it, flagging any that's already present. For unbounded streams add a time or count window so the state doesn't grow forever.

Answer by AI
  • Track seen keys in a hash set and flag any repeat on arrival.
  • For very large streams, swap in a Bloom filter to bound memory.
  • Use a sliding time or count window so state doesn't grow without limit.

Q: Design a scalable notification system that alerts underwriters when a risk threshold is breached.

A: Stream risk events through a message queue, run a threshold service that evaluates each event, and fan out breaches to underwriters through a notification service with pluggable channels like email, in-app and SMS. Make delivery idempotent, add retries with backoff, and keep an audit trail for compliance.

Answer by AI
  • Ingest risk events via a queue and evaluate them in a threshold service.
  • Fan out breaches through a notification service with multiple channels.
  • Add idempotency, retries and an audit log for reliability and compliance.

Q: How would you architect a microservices solution to replace a legacy monolithic claims application?

A: Decompose by business capability such as claims intake, adjudication, payments and notifications, put an API gateway in front, and give each service its own datastore. Migrate incrementally with the strangler pattern so the monolith shrinks as new services take over, using async events for cross-service work.

Answer by AI
  • Split services by business capability, each with its own data store.
  • Use the strangler pattern to migrate off the monolith incrementally.
  • Connect services with an API gateway and async events, versioning contracts.
