Direct Line Insurance Group is a UK general insurer that sells motor, home, and other personal and small business cover through brands including Direct Line, Churchill, Privilege, Green Flag, and Darwin. The company was formed in 2012 when it was spun out of Royal Bank of Scotland Group through an initial public offering in October 2012. Its head office is in Bromley, England, and it employed roughly 10,200 people in 2024.

On 1 July 2025 Aviva plc completed its acquisition of Direct Line for about £3.7 billion, and the business was delisted from the London Stock Exchange, where it had traded under the ticker DLG. Direct Line now operates as a subsidiary inside Aviva's UK general insurance division rather than as an independent listed company. For the 2024 financial year it reported revenue of £4,567.0 million.

After the takeover, Owen Morris became CEO of UK personal lines at Aviva with responsibility for the Direct Line business, reporting to Jason Storah, CEO of Aviva's UK and Ireland general insurance. Tom Latter was appointed finance director for Direct Line. The previous chief executive, Adam Winslow, and the previous chief financial officer, Jane Poole, both left the business when the deal completed.

Direct Line Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Give an example of a time when you worked as part of a team.

A: Pick one real project where the team hit a shared goal, then use STAR to explain your specific contribution and the result. Keep the focus on what you did, not just what the group did.

Answer by AI
  • Choose an example where the outcome depended on collaboration, not solo effort.
  • Use STAR: set the situation, your task, the action you took, and the measurable result.
  • Name how you handled a disagreement or covered for a teammate to show real teamwork.

Q: Tell us about a time when you spoke up in a group meeting.

A: Describe a moment you raised an idea or flagged a risk that others had missed, and explain the positive effect it had. Show you can contribute without dominating.

Answer by AI
  • Pick a time your input changed a decision or prevented a mistake.
  • Explain how you framed it respectfully so the group stayed on side.
  • Close with the outcome so it's clear speaking up added value.

Q: Describe a time when you gave exceptional customer service.

A: Tell a story where you went past the basic ask to solve a customer's real problem, and mention the feedback or result. Direct Line rates service highly, so make the customer the hero.

Answer by AI
  • Start with the customer's problem and why it mattered to them.
  • Show the extra step you took that a script wouldn't have covered.
  • End with the result, such as a resolved issue, thanks, or a retained customer.

Q: Pre-recorded video interview with three questions: why this role, plus two competency questions on delivering results (30 seconds to think, two minutes to answer).

A: Treat each recording like a mini presentation: use the 30 seconds to pick one clear example, then answer in a tight STAR structure. Practise out loud first so you fill the two minutes without rambling.

Answer by AI
  • For the why question, tie your motivation to Direct Line's brands and customer focus.
  • For competency questions, have STAR stories ready on hitting a target or deadline.
  • Look at the camera, speak steadily, and use the thinking time to structure your points.
