Maplebear Inc., which does business as Instacart, is a grocery technology and delivery company founded in 2012 by Apoorva Mehta, Max Mullen and Brandon Leonardo. It started in the San Francisco Bay Area delivering food from local grocers and now works with about 2,200 retail banners covering nearly 100,000 store locations. The company is headquartered at 50 Beale Street in San Francisco and trades on Nasdaq under the ticker CART after its September 2023 IPO.
The business runs on three main lines. Instacart Marketplace handles same-day ordering and fulfillment across grocery, beauty, electronics, pet and home categories. The Enterprise platform, including Storefront Pro and Caper smart carts, gives retailers their own e-commerce and in-store technology. Instacart Ads sells advertising and consumer insights to brands, and that business passed $1 billion in ads and other revenue in 2025.
Instacart reported $3.74 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025 and about 3,600 corporate employees, alongside a shopper network of roughly 600,000 people. In Q1 2026 it crossed $10 billion in quarterly gross transaction value and $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, with GAAP net income of $144 million. Chris Rogers took over as CEO in August 2025 after Fidji Simo left for OpenAI, and he also serves as Chairperson.
