Maplebear Inc., which does business as Instacart, is a grocery technology and delivery company founded in 2012 by Apoorva Mehta, Max Mullen and Brandon Leonardo. It started in the San Francisco Bay Area delivering food from local grocers and now works with about 2,200 retail banners covering nearly 100,000 store locations. The company is headquartered at 50 Beale Street in San Francisco and trades on Nasdaq under the ticker CART after its September 2023 IPO.

The business runs on three main lines. Instacart Marketplace handles same-day ordering and fulfillment across grocery, beauty, electronics, pet and home categories. The Enterprise platform, including Storefront Pro and Caper smart carts, gives retailers their own e-commerce and in-store technology. Instacart Ads sells advertising and consumer insights to brands, and that business passed $1 billion in ads and other revenue in 2025.

Instacart reported $3.74 billion in revenue for fiscal 2025 and about 3,600 corporate employees, alongside a shopper network of roughly 600,000 people. In Q1 2026 it crossed $10 billion in quarterly gross transaction value and $1 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, with GAAP net income of $144 million. Chris Rogers took over as CEO in August 2025 after Fidji Simo left for OpenAI, and he also serves as Chairperson.

Instacart Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Instacart's gross merchandise volume (GMV) moved by a given percent this quarter. How would you investigate causes, and what recommendations would you make?

A: Break GMV into its drivers first, then isolate which one moved and whether the shift is seasonal, segment-specific or a product change. Close with a recommendation tied to the driver you found, not to the headline number.

Answer by AI
  • Decompose GMV into orders times average order value, then split orders into active customers times order frequency, so you know which factor actually moved.
  • Segment by cohort, retailer, region and platform, and line the change up against release dates, pricing changes, promotions and known seasonality before calling anything causal.
  • Recommend one action per confirmed driver, state the metric you'd expect to move and propose an experiment to confirm it rather than shipping on a correlation.

Q: Given a table with results from an experiment, what would you recommend to the product manager given these results?

A: Check validity before you read the result: sample ratio, run length, and whether the primary metric was pre-registered. Then give a clear ship, hold or iterate call with the effect size and confidence interval attached.

Answer by AI
  • Validate the setup first: randomisation balance, sample ratio mismatch, novelty effects and whether the test ran through full weekly cycles.
  • Report the effect size with its confidence interval instead of just a p-value, and check guardrail metrics so a win on one number isn't a loss somewhere else.
  • Give one recommendation, ship, hold or iterate, and say what you'd need to see to change your mind.

Q: How and when would you incorporate data into the product life cycle? Why?

A: Data belongs at every stage, but the job changes: sizing and opportunity work up front, instrumentation and metric design during build, experimentation at launch, and monitoring afterwards.

Answer by AI
  • Discovery: size the opportunity, segment users and pull behavioural evidence for the problem before anyone writes a spec.
  • Build: define the success metric and guardrails, then make sure events are instrumented before launch instead of after.
  • Launch and beyond: run the experiment, then set up dashboards and alerts so regressions surface without someone remembering to look.

Q: When would you use a regression model, as opposed to an experiment, and why?

A: Run an experiment when you can randomise and you need a causal answer. Reach for regression on observational data when randomising isn't possible, isn't ethical or would cost too much.

Answer by AI
  • Experiments give unbiased causal estimates because randomisation balances confounders you didn't think to measure.
  • Regression fits when the treatment can't be randomised, when you're modelling historical data, or when you need a prediction rather than a causal effect.
  • If you must use observational data for a causal question, say so and name the technique you'd use to reduce bias, along with the assumptions it rests on.
