Hargreaves Lansdown is a UK retail investment and savings platform founded in Bristol in 1981 by Peter Hargreaves and Stephen Lansdown. It lets private investors hold funds, shares, pensions and cash savings in one place through ISAs, SIPPs, fund and share accounts and drawdown products, and it also offers financial advice and workplace pensions. The registered office is at 1 College Square South, Anchor Road, Bristol.

The business serves more than 2 million clients and administers over £172bn of client assets. For the year to 30 June 2025 it reported record assets under administration of £172.7bn, up 11%, underlying profit before tax of £544.3m, up 19%, net new business of £6bn and 136,000 net new clients, taking the total to 2.02 million. Client retention was 91.5%.

Hargreaves Lansdown traded on the London Stock Exchange from 2007 until March 2025, when a consortium of CVC Capital Partners, Nordic Capital and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority took it private in a deal valuing the company at about £5.4bn. Since then the owners have backed a technology and service transformation plan, and the leadership has turned over heavily. The company employs over 2,000 people across Bristol, London and Warsaw.

Hargreaves Lansdown Interview Questions & Answers

Q: Tell me a time you went above and beyond

A: Pick one real example and walk through the situation, what you chose to do beyond the standard process, and the result for the client or the team. Keep it specific and end with the measurable outcome.

Answer by AI
  • Set the scene in two lines: who the client or colleague was and what the normal expectation looked like.
  • Describe the extra step you took and why you judged it worth the effort, including anything you had to check or escalate.
  • Close with the outcome and what you carried into later work, ideally something measurable like a resolved complaint or saved time.

Q: Tell me a time you faced a hard situation and how you managed it

A: Use a STAR structure and choose a situation with genuine pressure, such as a deadline clash, an upset client or a process that broke. Focus most of your answer on the actions you personally took.

Answer by AI
  • Name the difficulty plainly and say what was at stake if it wasn't handled.
  • Break your response into steps: what you triaged first, who you looped in, and how you kept people informed.
  • Finish with the resolution and one honest reflection on what you'd do differently next time.

Q: Why do you want to work at Hargreaves Lansdown?

A: Tie your motivation to the platform's scale and its retail investor focus, then connect that to the kind of work you want to do. Avoid generic praise and mention something concrete about the business.

Answer by AI
  • Reference something real: a Bristol-based platform serving over 2 million private investors with more than £172bn under administration.
  • Link that to your own interest, whether that's client service, regulated financial operations or investing itself.
  • End with what you'd bring, not just what you'd get, so the answer lands as a two-way fit.

Q: How do you handle a client who is upset about a delay on their account?

A: Acknowledge the impact first, give a clear factual position on what happened, then set a specific next step and follow through. Never guess at a resolution date you can't control.

Answer by AI
  • Open by listening and confirming what the client understands, so you're solving the right problem.
  • Explain what you can and can't confirm, and say when you'll come back rather than promising an outcome.
  • Log the case, chase it yourself, and update the client even when there's no news.
