Free Time Tracking Software

Thirty days completely free with every Pro feature and unlimited users, no credit card. This page also does the arithmetic on what permanently free tools cost you, because that number is rarely zero.

Direct answer

Insight by Hyring is free for 30 days with every Pro feature, unlimited users, and no credit card required. After the trial, Pro costs $7 per user per month and Enterprise $14, under the founding offer for the first 7,000 companies, against list prices of $14 and $21.

There is no permanently free tier. Several competitors offer one, and this page explains honestly when that is the better choice and when it costs considerably more than it saves.

Is Insight by Hyring Free

Free for 30 days with nothing held back, then $7 per user per month.

Most trials in this category are a reduced product with a countdown attached. This one is not. Every company starts on the full Pro tier: the companion avatar, focus music rooms, wellbeing reminders, kudos, screenshots with privacy controls, the AI business intelligence bot, and unlimited history and exports. Unlimited team members, no card, and everything you generate carries over if you subscribe.

What we do not have is a permanently free plan. That is a real difference from some competitors and worth stating plainly rather than burying, because for a certain kind of buyer it settles the question.

What Free Actually Costs

Free measures what you pay. It does not measure what it costs, and in time tracking those are very different numbers.

What a free time tracker costs a 20-person teamAnnual figures at a $150 blended rate, modelling 30 minutes of unrecorded work per person per day
Free tool: licence cost$0
Free tool: unrecorded hours never invoiced$780,000
Insight by Hyring Pro: licence cost at $7$1,680
Insight by Hyring: unrecorded hours$0

Free measures what you pay, not what it costs. A manual timer asks the user to supply the data, and reconstructed time runs lower than actual time consistently and in one direction, because nobody invents a call they did not take.

The mechanism is simple. A free timer asks the user to supply the data. Someone has to remember to start it, remember to stop it, and reconstruct whatever they missed at the end of the week. Every organisation that has run one already knows the result: reconstructed time is lower than actual time, consistently, because people forget calls and rarely invent them.

For a team where nothing is billed by the hour, that gap is a reporting inaccuracy. For an agency, a law firm, or a consultancy, it is revenue that was earned and then never invoiced, and it does not appear as a line item anywhere.

What Free Tiers Withhold

Usually a timer with the useful parts removed.

Common gating across free plans in this category

Most free plans in this category are a timer with the useful parts removed: no activity data, no screenshots, no approvals, no integrations. The Insight by Hyring trial withholds nothing for 30 days, including the companion, focus rooms, AI, and unlimited users.

The pattern across the category is consistent. Free plans give you the stopwatch and gate the rest: activity levels, screenshots, approval workflows, integrations, advanced reporting, and anything resembling analysis. That is a reasonable commercial decision and it means the free tier answers exactly one question, how long, which is the least valuable of the questions you probably have.

What the Trial Includes

Everything, for 30 days, at unlimited scale.

Desktop companion

A floating avatar that reads the day and speaks to the employee before any manager sees it. Offers a sprint, checks in on suspicious perfection, celebrates a good run.

Shared focus music rooms

Teams listen in sync across curated channels, with room presence showing who is deep in work. No competitor in this category has built this.

Wellbeing reminders

Water, stretch, the 20-20-20 eye rule, end-of-day wind-down, and custom prompts, with notifications muted during focus sessions.

Kudos and team pulse

Recognition and presence in the same product as the work data, rather than a separate culture tool nobody opens.

An AI you can ask

Plain questions, plain answers. Who is closest to burnout, where did the sprint go, who is finishing after nine.

Employee-first visibility

Every person sees their own data before anyone else, and no keystroke content is ever captured. Permanent design, not a setting.

Insight by Hyring is the only product here connected to a hiring platform, so work data flows into people decisions and into the next hire. No standalone tracker can close that loop.

When Free Is the Right Answer

Three situations where a permanently free tool beats paying anything, including us.

  • Your budget is genuinely zero. Not "we would prefer not to spend", actually zero. Free tiers with unlimited users exist and they work. Use one.
  • Nothing is billed by the hour. If tracked time never becomes an invoice, the accuracy gap costs you a slightly wrong report rather than money.
  • You need durations and nothing else. If the only question is roughly where hours went, a timer answers it and everything above that is unused capability.

Outside those three, the calculation runs the other way quickly, and it is worth doing with your own numbers before defaulting to free.

Pricing After the Trial

Pro at $7 per user per month, Enterprise at $14, frozen for the life of the subscription.

FACT

Pro is $7 per user per month and Enterprise is $14, under the founding offer for the first 7,000 companies. List prices are $14 and $21. Your rate is frozen for as long as the subscription stays active, not for the first year. Before that, 30 days free with every Pro feature, unlimited users, and no credit card.
